Let It Ride

Let it Ride
Rock salt fired from an old carbide
I’m paid up till Thursday, so the Reverend let it slide
No hunting license and no place left to hide
I get up on my truck and let it ride
Let it Ride x4
Shooting pumpkins stupid mouth fulla sour mash
I stole all your coffee, your ammo and your cash
While down at the train track the zombies burning trash
Let it burn, baby let it burn
Let it Burn x4
Tied to the hood of a twisted burnt out wreck
Watching the crows do the scratch and the peck
Recording fulfilled prophecy into an old tape deck
let it run son, let it run
Let it Run x4
Driving home past midnight, chasing elusive sleep
Shifting in the bucket bone ratchet pop and creak
I don’t plan on finding nothing, but it’s my place to seek
And let it ride Lord, let it ride
Let it Ride x4

Trainyard

|

Trainyard-
Let’s walk down to the Trainyard and stir up some old Ghosts
see if we can remember what it is that we Love most
take this nail and scratch a line down past all that paint
and open up the bare metal to shine a Light up to the Saints
Iron, creosote and tar
these are the measures of just how far
a man can go to try and escape himself
and all the while his memories stew upon a shelf
I’ve got this itchy feeling that somewhere else instead
another shambling drifter shares these thoughts inside my head
Sit with me by the River and watch the Sun descend
the Light, the Water and the Trainyard
sets my Heart to mend
Iron, creosote and tar
these are the measures of just how far
a man can go to try and escape himself
and all the while his memories sit and wait upon the shelf
Sit with me by the River and watch the Sun descend
the Light, the Water and the Trainyard
sets my Heart to mend.

Willow Walk

Willow Walk
The Sun’s just about set; I think it’s time that you met yourself
as a shadow that moves
a slight breeze has kicked up, so hold out your cup
as we willow walk into this groove
The wind in the trees, all the proof that I need
that there’s a deep magic afoot
the way the branches sway is more than I can say about
this wonder in which we’ve been put
Willow walk with me and such marvels we’ll see
stepping beyond civilization
into a wonder that draws us asunder
to emerge in this hidden nation
Take a rest ‘neath this old willow tree
my leaves surround and protect
just as the fireflies aloft and dive
the water shines what the Moon reflects
You see with new eyes this quiet surprise
that exists just out of reach
but as we weave our way home, breathe in this spoke tome
so that one day you’ll share what I teach
Willow walk with me and such marvels we’ll see
stepping beyond civilization
into a wonder that draws us asunder
to emerge in this hidden nation x2
The Sun’s just about set
I think it’s time that you met
yourself as a shadow that moves.

Offer Up
Take a hubcap fulla teeth
offer up offer up
lift a stone, what’s underneath?

Honest hearts I do beseech
offer up offer up
lots to learn before we teach
offer up, yeah offer up
Offer up
Offer up
Fresh ground chalk and peppermint
offer up yeah offer up
Power borrowed and Power lent
offer up offer up
all this never cost a cent
offer up offer up
a few of you know just what I meant-
take it up now, take it up
Take it up
Take it up
Ya take a hubcap fulla teeth
offer up offer up
lift a stone, what’s underneath?

Honest hearts I do beseech
offer up offer up
a lot to learn before we can preach

Moonless Night
04:26
|
|||
Moonless Night-
Gathering up the corners, now careful not to spill
the Stars do rise and fall each according to their will
Fireflies cry out at night, the lake mirroring their call
and then a gator surfaces and joins in the ball
We’re out and about on this, a lovely moonless night
wary of the dangers with eyes reflecting such delights
it seems quiet at first, but once you settle in just right
you’re blanketed by ancient stories on a perfect moonless night
Walking through the tall grass while ancient trees surround
these hills so deep and quiet, stories soaked into the ground
those seeds of Myth grow wild, the wind gathers up their sound
to find receptive Hearts scattered the whole world round
We’re out and about on this moonless night
aware of the dangers, your eyes bright with wondrous lights
it’s no longer quiet as you’re settled in warm and tight
deep in the blankets of this moonless night
We sit beneath an old oak tree listening to the winds
the stories that they share with us have become just like old friends
the different tales all weave together, a blanket we wrap tight
to catch the stars that rise and fall on this perfect moonless night.

Mystic Rhyme

|

Mystic Rhyme
The monster spoke a mystic rhyme
while the clocks held up the hands of crime
I wish I knew which ones were mine
and then away we go
A paint can and a party dress
the miser’s smile, just one more guess
the priest won’t hear the beast confess
as the Sun hangs low
These things we do, of dance and song
are just to point out what don’t belong
we tally up all the evidence of wrong
away we go away
The Robber and the Moneyman
roll out the Map and scheme up the Plan
to steal the Dreams from foreign lands
then sell them as a show
The Hillfolk buck and shuffle step
while in her chair the widow slept
with dreams bereft of strife and debt
his smiling face she knows
These things we do, of song and dance
memories of warm romance
and in the end we’re pulled away
there’s one more verse for us to play
The band’s all tucked, the singer through
window glass moon, a perfect blue
this story told now honest and true
away this monster goes
away this monster goes
away we go away x4

Keys & Seeds
03:28
|
|||
Keys and Seeds-
I keep a pocket fulla dried corn and another full of keys
I place the kernels in the locks and plant the keys like seeds
I wander the afternoon to let my shadow breathe
and measure off the distance between the wants and the needs
Digging out a piece of chalk, I write the numbers down
on old railroad tickets that I find scattered on the ground
I bundle them up and mail them off to a place that don’t exist
And despite my crimes, they arrive on time, and the conductor grants my wish
I rode a train for days and nights, until I ran out of track
only thinking about the getting there, and not the coming back
so I took my time and lost my mind and drew myself a map
then waited telling stories until I felt Destiny’s cold slap
I reached into my pocket to find a strange new key
and hanging from the end of it was a photograph of me
I put it into the lock and turned it carefully
and for an instance I glimpsed the workings of what it means to be
I closed the door and locked it tight, and put away the key
then wandered around this dusty town doubting everything I see
I went back to my practice of planting keys and seeding locks
and when nighttime fell I turned in to listen for what knocks
Still on the train that is my brain and long since out of track
I’m ready for what’s ahead of me and I ain’t never looking back
the key I found has opened me, and now I am the map
and I’m sitting here telling you stories while Destiny takes a nap
yeah, I’m sitting here telling you stories…

Crow Secrets
04:03
|

Crow Secrets
I reached my arm up long to grab a passing crow
and pulled it down close to ask all that it knows
about where the moon sleeps when the sun’s overhead
and if it’s true what I heard about the shoes of the dead
The crow looked at me with its black button eyes
and said, “You wouldn’t understand so I won’t even try,
to explain to your brain about the secrets of rain, or how to get
a ticket on a dusk bound train.”
Crow crow, what do you know
I got a powerful need of such secrets and so
I’m gonna hold you down till you spill the beans
about things that no person has seen
I reached in my pocket for a few kernels of corn
picked from the crop on the day I was born
I offered them freely and the crow ate ‘em up
and I smiled as luck poured into my cup
“That was my birthday grain you foolish bird,
now you’ll tell me what you know, and you won’t spare a word
I’ll bottle your stories and ferment them well
and I’ll drink from them freely when I need what they tell.”
Crow crow, what do you know
give me your secrets and I’ll let them grow
into the gardens of wonder that will fill my need
all because you ate my birthday seeds
The crow told me of giants and trees and made of stone
and ghosts that rearrange your memories when you’re not at home
of girls that slay monsters with the promise of a kiss
and the part of your heart you thought you’d never miss
I caught them all carefully in brown bottle glass
then corked them and labeled them so I won’t have to ask
and packed them away into an old knapsack
then caught the dusk bound train for the long journey back
Crow crow, I know what you know
about the clockworks of Nature and how it all grows
but don’t worry crow I won’t sell what I’ve caught
it’s just this most unusual way to get taught.

Thing in the Barn
03:50
|

Thing in the Barn
I rise up before morning while the Sun’s still asleep
sling my tools across my shoulder, watchful as I creep
unlock the barn door, mindful of that old Creak
I got some work to do that you best not ever speak
Beetles in the bone box supping on the skulls
nails rusting water, gas can’s nearly full
take this revolver and aim it at the Moon
pull on this ripcord and ask your final Boon
Musty canvas tarps over dry spider bones
put away your map child, we’re a long ways from home
a night of shoveling coal and day of quiet rest
the bruise upon my forehead warns others that I’m Blessed
Beetles in the bone box supping on the skulls
nails rusting water, gas can’s nearly full
take this revolver and aim it at the Moon
pull on this ripcord and ask your final Boon
Sparkplugs and dried corn are the Offerings I leave
I sit and listen carefully as the Hills tell me of their needs
packing up my belongings to the whispering of the Trees
I slip through the Night as it do as it please
I’m off to the Docklands on a steamer heading South
my traveling companions all keep their money in their mouths
I look at my watch and Smile at the Time
that Thing in the Barn, such a poetic crime
it breathes on its own now, and not a moment too soon
bows its head in Respect to receive Blessings of the Moon
Beetles in the bone box supping on the skulls
nails rusting water, gas can’s nearly full
take this revolver, shoot it at the Moon
pull on this ripcord and ask your final Boon.

Steam Engine
Roll the truck down the hill so we don’t wake up the Lord
stole some gas from the Devil just to even the score
then we head into the hills and the rain starts to pour
already used up two Wishes, only got the one more
Steam engine, steam engine please carry us home
away from these things made of teeth, hair and bone
we sit on the rocks out here all alone
steam engine, steam engine please carry us home
Got up in the hills and Trouble was already there
waiting so patient and eager to share
hands spread wide to welcome us in
I held my last Wish and surrendered to Sin
Steam engine, steam engine please carry us home
can’t afford a ticket so I’ll write you a poem
about Secrets and Wishes and children that roam
steam engine, steam engine please carry us home
As we sunk deeper I reached for your hand
pulled up my last Wish, made it Sincere and not grand
I awoke on the Train with you sleeping right there
my final Wish granted and I got to Share
Steam engine, steam engine now carries us Home
bearing the Scars and Treasures of our travel tome
a Magnificent Beast carved from steel and chrome
steam engine, steam engine we’re on our way Home x2

Campfire song
Words of Tinder, words of Flint
exhaled slowly until meaning is spent
I gather up all Power lent
and search for those likewise bent
I lit this Fire for those lost in the night
bullied and beaten, but still in the fight
that Spark in your Heart hears and burns Bright
knowing the difference in what’s wrong and what’s right
I check my list and double back
to throw the doubters offa this track
and start back again tending this Fire
guarding against all the cheaters and liars
I tend this Fire for those in the night
bruised and hurt, but sensing this Light
the Fire in your Heart burns ever so Bright
and eager to lend Power to this fight
We huddle close as a rain song sings
Hold Tight this Moment as one of those things
you Stitch to your Heart with the Joy that it brings
that Ache to the Bone is just what I mean
We are this Fire that Burns Bright in the night
our scars a Shared History that binds us tight
it rains all around us and yet we’re doing all right
because we Understand that we’ve Won the fight.

Away I Go
03:31
|

Away I Go
I like the way the drums roll
and echo off the boat’s hull
I settle into a shuffle stroll
and away I go away
I like the way the Moon shines
the Stars floating in inky wine
sends shivers up and down my spine
and away I go away
I walk this way because I can
listening to such Divine plans
laid down by Inhuman hands
Stubborn as I am just because I can
I like the way the Monsters play
and show up whenever logic strays
and when I ask They point the way
and away I go away
I like the way it builds suspense
the Music quietly sings intense
to me it all makes a certain kind of sense
and away I go away
I walk this way because I can
listening to such Divine plans
laid down by Inhuman hands
Stubborn as I am just because I can
I walk this way because I do
and in my Heart I know it’s True
to follow something Other than you
and away I go away
Away I go away
away I go away
away I go away
away…
